Overview

Presently the seat of the Senate of the Italian Republic, Madama Palace is a majestic building located on Corso Rinascimento, just two steps from Piazza Navona. Erected in the 15th Century by Pope Sixtus IV, Madama Palace was repeatedly restored and designated for numerous uses: an artistic meeting place during the Renaissance, an upper-class residence in the 17th Century, tribunal and Police headquarters in the 18th Century. In 1871, a year after the Conquest of Rome, which finally incorporated the city in the Italian Unification, the building was restored again to become the seat of the Senate of the newly defined Kingdom of Italy.
