The Tarpea cliff over which traitors were thrown stands between the Teatro di Marcello and the Forum; it is visible from Piazza della Consolazione. The cliff was named after Tarpea, the beautiful but perfidious woman who betrayed Rome. She is said to have told the Sabines (who were warring against the Romans) the secret path to reach the city's defensive fort. For this she was dispatched over the edge. Another legend says that she was buried on the cliff and covered by gold paid to the Sabines for her help against the Romans.
