This church stands on the ancient remains of a two-story house belonging to the Senator Pudente. Earlier, they served as foundations for thermal bath buildings. It was under Pope Siricio that the church was built on the site. An exquisite mosaic in Byzantine style can still be seen in the apse; it depicts Christ surrounded by the apostles, St Pudenziana and her sister St Praxedes. The late 16th-century Cappella Caetani, rich in marbles, mosaics and stuccoes, was designed by Francesco da Volterra and Carlo Maderno. The remains of the original Roman house are still visible underneath in the crypt.
