Overview
The theatre came into being in 1981 when Luciano Damiani wanted to create his own space for theatrical purposes. It stands in Testaccio dei Cocci where in the 17th Century, the citizens of Rome disposed of their broken crockery. The theatre takes place in a series of grottoes on three levels originally used for storing equipments, seating, restaurants etc. Building work in the grottoes was completed in 1987 after five years with communicating floors below a 17th-century vault. Luciano Damiani's productions vary between concerts, prose works, opera and artistic exhibitions. Each room can hold 99 people with 60 in the stalls and 30 in the balcony. Checchino is one of the many nearby restaurants for a meal after the performance.
