Overview
This tower is a major example of medieval architecture. It was built in 1203 on top of an ancient building in Vespasian's forum by Pope Innocent III. It later passed to the Pope's family, the Counts of Segni, which was very significant in the history of the church. The building symbolically represents the temporal power of the church and, consequently, the power of this family. Over the centuries, it has been seriously damaged by earthquakes.
