Overview

A monument to the Veronese poet Aleardo Aleardi (1812-1878) was erected in 1883 in the small Piazza Santi Apostoli, facing Corso Cavour. Aleardi took part in the 1848 defense of the Veneto Republic and was twice imprisoned by the Austrian authorities, once in Mantua in 1852 and a second time in Josephstadt (Bohemia) in 1859. A Romantic poet by nature, he reached the apex of his popularity with the publication of his Canti: many of his poems dealt with patriotic themes and as recorded on the plaque, at the base of the monument. His poems inspired feelings of patriotism in the youth of Italy, they spoke of the glory of fighting for the Motherland.
