Slottet og Slottsparken or the Royal Palace and Gardens are an icon of Norway's glorious history. The palace was erected in 1849. The picturesque gardens surrounding it were inspired by German styles. Slottsbakken, the hill on which the palace rests, offers a magnificent view over Karl Johans Gate. On Norwegian National Day (May 17th), the King and the rest of the royal family stand on the balcony and wave at thousands of children parading down the street. Tours are arranged for visitors during summer. Please note that tickets must be purchased in advance.
