Despite the seemingly never-ending summer stream of travellers on foot, pony and in jaunting car, the Gap of Dunloe remains a spectacular beauty spot. Viewing the Gap during the quiet winter months can be preferable, though it may be difficult to find a long enough dry period to walk the four mile stretch. The rewards are great: beautiful mountain lakes, cascading rivers on the mountainsides, and gravity-defying sheep in every visible crevice. As travellers reach the top of the Gap, the lakes spread out in a breath-taking vista. The road then descends into Black Valley and leads to motor boats bound for Killarney across the lakes.

The Gap of Dunloe is an experience not to be missed! If you're lucky enough to go when the weather is good, (late in May is perfect), your best bet is to make a day out of it, by getting a spot on the Gap of Dunloe Adventure Tour. This tour starts at Kate Kearney's Cottage and consists of a Jaunting Car ride through the Gap to Black Valley where you catch a small motorboat at Lord Brendan's Cottage. Eat some lunch here and have a drink. Then the motorboat takes you across the lakes of Killarney and drops you off at Ross Castle. You then catch a shuttle car back to Kate Kearney's Cottage. From there you can either stay and eat at Kate's (which is a very nace place with good food and sometimes musical entertainment) or you can drive back into Killarney and eat supper there. Either way it makes for a whole days entertainment that can't be beat. Especially if it's your first trip to the area....   Read More
