There’s no lack of beds in Barcelona and you can find some of the best Barcelona hotels at virtually every level of luxury and price. Those wishing for five star comforts are well accommodated, and the price-conscious can easily find a clean and quiet room with the comforts of home. We recommend that you book ahead, even at less expensive establishments, as hotels do tend to fill up. Even if you’re out of your backpacking years when you’d shack up with 15 strangers to save a dollar, don’t scoff at a hostel in Barcelona. Economy hostales are often some of the hidden gems of the city—tucked into some of the most ancient and beautiful buildings in town. Because so many hotels are built around a central garden or patio, guests have their pick of quieter interior rooms or brighter (but potentially louder) outward-facing rooms. And no matter whether you’re in the lap of luxury or an austere hostal, most places are now air-conditioned.
Neighborhood: L’Eixample Price Range: Expensive Design buffs will want to make a stop at hotel Murmuri, a modern hotel set within a 19th century townhouse. Conceived of by design honcho Kelly Hoppen, rooms are done in a clean East meets West style. While Murmuri doesn’t have its own spa and pool, guests are welcome to access the pool and spa services at its sister hotel, the
Majestic. There’s also a nice, on-site restaurant with Asiatic dishes.
Neighborhood: La Rambla and El Raval Price Range: Expensive Despite the name, don’t plan on setting up your tent and lighting a fire here. Casa Camper translates the fun and quirkiness of the Camper Shoes brand into a modern boutique hotel experience. Each room is actually two rooms—a bedroom and a comfortable lounge across the hall, fitted with a hammock and balcony views. The two rooms are separated by a public hallway, so we recommend you bring pajamas and a robe if you’re planning on staying. Steal a snack from the Tentempié—a free café available to guests at all hours, or head around the corner to Dos Palillos—also run by the Camper crew—for Spanish-influenced Asian cuisine.
Neighborhood: L’Eixample Price Range: Moderate The Soho Hotel was named after New York City’s hip downtown neighborhood, and the hotel’s accommodations and accoutrements seek to emulate that slick and cool vibe. Guests are welcomed into an impressive glass-paneled lobby, and once inside, are treated to sleek, modernist furnishings and room design courtesy of Philippe Starck. Rooms on the back of the building overlook an interior courtyard and many have terraces. The hotel’s requisite rooftop pool overlooks the glamorous L’Eixample neighborhood (it’s almost worthwhile to stay here just for that view).
Neighborhood: Barri Gòtic Price Range: Moderate A far cry from some of the city’s sprawling mega-hotels, Bonic Guesthouse has only six rooms, each of which is homey, charming and warm. Just one short block from La Barceloneta, Bonic is the perfect guesthouse for the sun-loving beach bum. The downside is that there are no private bathrooms (each room shares a bathroom with another room). If you’re fine with that (as most Europeans are) cool, if not, take it into consideration when thinking about staying here.
Neighborhood: L’Eixample Price Range: Moderate Modern and spacious, this centrally located hotel consists of two buildings with 19 refurbished rooms in total. Goya pays attention to the details—the bathrooms in each room, for instance, still have their original mosaic tile floors. It’s a decent place to stay at a good price.
Neighborhood: L’Eixample Price Range: Moderate Just steps from Gaudi’s Casa Milà lies Hotel Omm, a 91 bedroom modern hotel with warm touches like handmade rugs and canopy beds. We especially love it here for the cool rooftop terrace and swimming pool. You can also enjoy a cocktail at Omm’s Mon Key club and there are top DJs from Wednesday through Sunday. If you’re dragging yourself out of bed after an exhausting night out, you can always book a lazy day at the on-site spa.
Neighborhood: La Ribera Price Range: Moderate The Guardian calls the Grand Hotel “one of the five best European new hip hotels." The hotel’s 147 rooms feature copious natural light and spare minimalist styles. The rooftop infinity pool offers broad views of the Barri Gòtic neighborhood and is close to La Rambla and some of the city’s top attractions.
Neighborhood: Gràcia Price Range: Moderate Part of the Axel chain of gay-friendly hotels, Axel Hotel Barcelona has been named one of the best gay-friendly hotels in the world. But it’s also certainly very hetero-friendly. The 105-room hotel is a gleaming mix of old Barcelona and “modernista” style, as evidenced in its polished marble lobby and clean and well-appointed guest rooms. There’s a ground floor lounge, a rooftop bar, a gym with personal trainers, a spa and a cool little restaurant simply called Kitchen.
Neighborhood: L’Eixample Price Range: Budget Located just blocks from the Manzana de la Discordia, Hotel Praktik Rambla is small boutique hotel built around a simple concept: smart design at a reasonable price. Built out of an incredible 18th century modernista palace, its 43 rooms feature high ceilings and large windows. Enjoy the hotel’s quiet terrace with its open-air shower, but whatever you do don’t show up naked because bathing suits are NOT optional.
Neighborhood: Montjuic and Poble Sec Price Range: Budget If you’re traveling on the cheap and are watching every Euro, we recommend HelloBCN Hostel. Built in 2004, this clean and modern hostel offers shared rooms with 4, 6 or 10 beds, as well as private accommodations with private bathrooms. The crowd is young, fun and can often be found at the wildly inexpensive lobby bar.
