La Alhondiga is one of the most typical and popular buildings in Bilbao. Built in 1906, by the architect, Ricardo Bastida, this singular structure was one of the first flat-roofed, reinforced concrete buildings in the city. The building, with a Catalan modernist influence, has a rectangular storey with chamfer and aligned interior naves, and was used for many years as a warehouse by many wine merchants. At present it's being built into a cultural and leisure centre.
