The restaurant Dena Ona has been in the popular Deusto district of Bilbao for thirty years. Home-style traditional Basque cuisine is the specialty of this establishment. However, its fame is in no small part due to its appetizers, and it has won the regional award for best "rabas" (squid or cuttlefish breaded and fried in strips as opposed to rings). The decor is classical and "stately", as its owner defines it. It is a favorite with fairly well-heeled mature people of thirty and over. But man does not live on appetisers alone and in the Dena ona "everything is good", as its Basque name suggests, and we recommend the stuffed peppers, clams "a la marinera" and hake fillets with "kokotxas" (delicious meat from hake jaw). Wines are mainly Riojas here, and the 94 Azipilicueta at 1,600 pesetas is recommended.
