In 1974, Dr. José Luis Goti Iturriaga, then head of the Bilbao Medical Science Academy, was a strong advocate of creating a medical museum. Five years later, the Medicine and Sciences Museum was inaugurated on the Universidad del País Vasco (only 12km from Bilbao). The collection includes more than 8,000 tools and devices used in cardiology, ophthalmology, radiology, etc. An old operating room, lab and office. There are also more than 7,000 specialized books on medicine and sciences with a noteworthy collection of documentation and iconography.
