Visit this district on the eastern flank of the Alhambra hill, to see the the characteristic whitewashed Moorish-style houses called cármenes, with their pretty, walled gardens. One of the most attractive belonged to the famous composer Manuel de Falla and it's open to the public, Casa-Museo Manuel de Falla. There's another one further up the hill worth looking at too, Cármen de los Mártires. The Christian "reconquest" of Spain was a long drawn out process that lasted from the 9th to the 15th century. The Christian armies moved from north to south slowly taking land back from the Moors who had been here since the early 8th century. When the Christians took the town of Antequera to the west, the Moorish refugees fled to Granada and settled in this district, and that's how it got its name. turismo@alhama.org
