Overview
La Casa del Abuelo, or Grandfather's House,' is a unique Spanish experience. After opening in 1906, it became famous for its wine and rosquillas (doughnuts), then passed through a sandwich phase in the 20's and 30's, and then finally entered into the world of shrimp - for which its most famous now - after the Civil War. Currently, the garlic shrimp is the most popular dish (and some say the best in the city), while the happy waiters are still serving up chatos (small glasses) of hand-picked sweet wine from Alicante. The façade features dark wood typical of Madrileño taverns, and gaudy print advertising of all the different varieties of shrimp offered here. -Michelle Campagna
