Thong, Madrid

The modernist décor and dark tones give the impression of a chic restaurant, but the prices remind diners that this place offers nothing but affordable food. The locals recommend the spicy sour soup to start–a delicious, hot blend of wood-ear and shitake mushrooms, white pepper, and vinegar–and anything with chicken as the main course. The lemon chicken or chicken with curry is particularly tasty. Everything on the menu goes down best with a nice cold Tsingtao. Thong is only open for lunch, and it resides in one of the most popular dining neighborhoods of downtown Madrid. Needless to say, the place gets pretty busy! - Michelle Campagna
