This quaint little town located in the province of Salamanca is a visual fest to weary urban eyes. Famous for its religious fiesta in honor of Virgin Mary, this little town is a sight to behold. Every September 8th, thousands of people congregate in El Castañar: the forest of Chestnuts in Béjar in order to celebrate Romería de la Virgen del Castañar. Things start early in the morning and there are activities to suit all tastes, including Mass in honor of the patron saint (Virgen del Castañar), a procession that carries her image from the sanctuary to the Plaza de los Tilos, and the main event: the pilgrimage to the lookout point known as the Mirador de la Virgen. The town attracts hoards and hoards of pilgrims and tourists year after year.
