Overview
This pretty town is located on the famous "Ruta de la Plata" (Silver Route), some 50km from Salamanca and it's famous for producing some of the best quality cured hams, sausages and cold meats in the country. The quality of the hams is regulated by a denominación de origen system the same way that good French and Spanish wines are controlled. The annual awards ceremony for the best hams takes place in Madrid every year in front of an audience of high-profile politicians and personalities. The main square is very attractive and the best time to visit is during the Matanza de Guijuelo, the Carnival (though not as spectacular as in Ciudad Rodrigo) or the summer fiesta during Aug.
