The church in Getaria was completed at the beginning of the 15th century, and the tower was added halfway through the 16th century. It is gothic in style, and it has an uneven ground layout in order to adapt to the terrain in which it is situated. It is covered by crossed rib vaults with notable differences in complexity between those of the central nave and those of the laterals. The triforium is fully preserved and decorated with gothic designs. An archaeological investigation was undertaken, resulting in the discovery of 18th century family graves and a medieval cemetery thought to be from the 12th century, as well as various objects from Roman times. This church is very important in Guipúzcoa's history, for it was here, on 6th July 1397, that the "Brotherhood of the General Councils" pact was signed between thirty of the province's villages. This represented the real political birth of this territory.
