This was always considered a nice port to moor in thanks to the protection offered by Mount Antón (better known as "the Getaria Mouse") against the wind. In the 17th century, various military bases were built to defend the port (some of which are still visible today), providing boats with even more protection. Extension work carried out from the 16th century up to today has given it a major infrastructure bump, allowing for the development of the fishing industry, fish markets and warehouses, along with the addition of a sports marina, and other recreational facilities. This is an ideal place to go for a walk and enjoy some of the area's culinary traditions (mostly fish). Another option is to climb to the top of the "Mouse" and enjoy the splendid view of the entire coast.
