This building is a landmark in Santander and epitomises solid, neoclassical architecture. It was built in 1791 as a hospital (the Hospital de San Rafael) which later became the renowned Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla. The building itself is rather sober, constructed from limestone blocks. It functioned as a hospital until 1928, and became a teaching institution for a while before being abandoned. In 1987 it was renovated and turned into the regional parliament. The inner courtyard was glassed in, and is now used to house temporary exhibitions. Visits to the building must be in groups and arranged beforehand by phoning the number above.
