Overview
A traditional, spectacular and entertaining element of the festivities which take place during the Fiestas del Pilar and other minor celebrations in Zaragoza is the appearance of the so-called "Giants and Bigheads". These grotesque figures are characters inspired by popular history and literature and the tradition goes back to the nineteenth century with neighbouring regions like Navarra, Catalonia and the Basque Country all taking part. The Giants, operated by people on stilts hiding inside them, march in procession like kings and queens and dance to melodies played on traditional instruments. Meanwhile, the "Bigheads", armed with sticks, run after the children and youths who dare to to laugh at them.
