Back in 1907, Josef Müller started to assemble a collection of artifacts from far off civilizations. This work was continued by his family and in 1977 a museum featuring this collection was made open to the public. Today at Musée Barbier-Müller, there are over 5,500 pieces in this building which is in the old city. Among the masks, the jewelry, the sculptures, one can see a unique collection of Indonesian megalithic monuments. There are also some unique pieces of Pre-Colombian Art. The museum has also acquired a worldwide reputation for publishing impressive art catalogues and books, and for staging two special exhibitions per year.
