Barbier-Mueller Museums has an exhaustive collection of artifacts from across countries. The display boasts objects used by primitive tribes and in civilizations which are thousand years old. Back in 1907, Josef Müller started to assemble a collection of artifacts from far off civilizations. This work was continued by his family and in 1977 a museum was opened to the public. Today at Musée Barbier-Müller, there are over 5,500 pieces in this building which is in the old city. Among the masks, the jewelery, the sculptures, one can see a unique collection of Indonesian megalithic monuments. There are also some unique pieces of Pre-Colombian Art. The museum has also acquired a worldwide reputation for publishing impressive art catalogues and books, and for staging two special exhibitions per year.
