Neighborhood: City Center
Cuisine: Mexican

Thanks to the Mañana restaurant the Genevans discovered Mexican food. Although many other Mexican restaurants have opened since, this restaurant remains one of the most popular of its kind. For those who are looking for an exotic cocktail, the Cactus Club is located beneath the restaurant. Wooden tables, chairs and Mexican artifacts add to the atmosphere of this colorful and lively place. This place offers generous portions of typical and often somewhat spicy Mexican specialties like guacamole and taquitos.

The worst meal I have ever eaten - AVOID AT ALL COSTS Upon entering Mañana my partner and I were not immediately struck by any suggestion of the horror which awaited us, festering on a couple of plates in the back, waiting to be microwaved and served up for our consumption. There was a sort of mariachi singing and playing his guitar in the bar area, which I thought was a nice touch. When we were shown to our seats I suppressed a smirk at the portrait of Emiliano Zapata on the wall behind my partner's head. Then on the wall to my left I saw what was, to my mind, the most offensive painting I had ever seen. It depicted a Native American squaw, lying prone with her buttocks facing the viewer, looking back over her shoulder with a coquettish smirk, naked except for a chief's headdress. Custer's Revenge committed to canvas. Shrugging, we ordered drinks. These arrived with some complementary tortilla chips, which were stale and utterly tasteless. Sensing something was amiss, we played it safe by ordering something we thought would be impossible to screw up--enchilladas. Surely no one could get that wrong? Not so. Literally five minutes after we gave our order the waiter returned with two plates of some greasy mess bearing little resemblance to the description on the menu. The food was lukewarm in parts and cold in others, filmed over and stuck to the plate, which was itself very hot. They had served us reheated food. There was a greyish mush vauely resembling dog food, which I eventually realised was supposed to be refried beans. The peas were wrinkled and shrunken. The salad was soggy and warmer than anything else on the plate. The cheese looked like vomit. It was painfully obvious that these meals had been prepared hours before and then nuked in the microwave for the first out-of-town dupes unlucky enough to have ordered the corresponding dish on the menu. Neither of us were able to eat what we were served. Less than twenty minutes after we walked into the place, we asked for the bill. Our disgust must have been written all over our faces. The apparent owner of the bar, a grinning middle-aged fellow who looked like a sales rep, took our plates away. He did not ask if we had enjoyed our meals--we had eaten a couple of forkfuls at most. He even looked around at the other diners as if he expected them to back him up. There was no 'thank you' and no 'goodbye' as we left and went back to our room, feeling rather like we had been robbed. We were both ill for the rest of the week. I should point out that these dishes contained chicken and rice, both of which are potentially very dangerous to eat if reheated. These are unscrupulous people who serve food unfit for human consumption. Avoid at all costs....   Read More
