To the south-west of the city center, is this impressive Portland stone memorial to the noted Quaker and philanthropist Joseph Sturge. He rose to public office in the city and was a leading campaigner for the abolition of slavery and for temperance. His memorial stands outside the five-star Marriott Birmingham, a landmark in itself, and shows Sturge standing on a plinth, his hand resting on a Bible. At his feet are figures of a woman with a black child, a reference to the anti-slavery campaign, and a figure holding an olive branch and a dove, representing peace.
