Old Monk (The), Birmingham

Another big Broad Street booze place, with a long, narrow front bar lined with secluded booths giving way to a large rear section. Sadly, the monk theme is not carried through in the décor, the management having plumped for the modern-traditional look, and it does not quite know whether it's a sports bar or a normal pub. Still, the service is friendly and the food is wholesome and, more to the point, cheap. There is a wide range of imported bottled lagers and an extensive wine list, with no less than five champagnes, but oddly no prices to aid your choice. As with most places round here, it gets very busy at weekends.
