Overview

This summit located in the North Downs, a ridge of chalk hills in Surrey, is famous for its sweeping views and steep roads and trails, notably the Zig Zag Road, which is known as a popular fitness test for cyclists. The National Trust owns most of the Box Hill area including popular sites like The Old Fort, built in the 1890s to protect England from continental Europe, and Salomons Memorial, which commemorates Leopold Salomons who purchased the Box Hill in 1914 to protect it from development. Visitors can follow the many trails or enjoy activities for children at the Discovery Zone. There are also take-away cafes in the park and a visitor's center. Opening times change based on the season as the park stays open from dusk to dawn. Box Hill is also a venue for road cycling events for the 2012 London Olympics.
