Cassia Oriental, London

Cassia Oriental takes up the Nouveau oriental baton with style, serving up authentic, far-East Asian food suitably jazzed up for the elegant Mayfair surroundings. Think 1920s Shanghai and you're almost there, sleek and tranquil, as opposed to the flash and garish. The food is excellent and, surprisingly for the area, reasonably priced. The Vietnamese Banh Tom - a fried sweet potato and prawn cake - is divine, as are the ubiquitous Shredded-Duck Pancakes, which are served with a thicker pancake that's reminiscent of Banh-Baos - light, rice-flour sweet buns. And for herbivores, the crispy Tofu is highly recommended. But why does the Chinese dessert menu feature chocolate mousse? Ah, well. Who's complaining?
