Known for its annual Summer Exhibition, which showcases contemporary art, the Royal Academy is a popular destination for art enthusiasts. It was founded in 1768 by Sir Joshua Reynolds and has held the Summer Exhibition every year since 1769. In 1999, it held a Monet retrospective that got over 800,000 visitors, making it the biggest art event ever in Britain. The range of works on exhibits is wide, and you might find John Soane's architecture and the Russian Amazons of the avant-garde being shown.
