Before becoming a part of the inner city, Shoreditch was a part of the extramural suburb of London around the Shoreditch Church. It was a nunnery that belonged to the Augustinian priory of Halliwell order. Legend says it was named after the mistress of Edward IV, Jane Shore who died in a ditch.
