Overview
Founded by a crusading Clergyman who believed that access to art would improve the lot of the working classes, this was one of the first galleries to emerge in the city's culturally rich East End. The Whitechapel Art Gallery has never held a permanent collection, preferring instead to showcase an ever-changing array of exhibitions, from individual artists such as Hockney, Kahlo and Freud to group shows. It has been acclaimed as the gallery that taught Britain to love modern art, but even if you don't know your Hirsts from your Emins, it's worth visiting just for the decor. The gallery is truly breathtaking, a luminous, cathedral-like space which enhances everything displayed there.
