Grill on the Alley (The), Manchester

The Grill caused quite a stir when it first opened its doors, allowing Manchester residents to sample the much-hyped Kobe beef – meat from cattle fed on beer and massaged daily from birth. This is an expensive option at £50 for an 8oz fillet, but there are plenty of other well-priced dishes, including a meltingly tender fillet steak at £15. You might find yourself distracted during your meal by the impressive lobster tank at the back of the restaurant, from which you may select your own culinary victim: this might not appeal to the squeamish but it certainly ensures freshness! Despite a few salads on the menu, this is not a place for vegetarians: committed carnivores or sea-food fans, however, would be hard-pushed to find a better restaurant than this gem. - Liz Gregory
