Miyako, Manchester

Miyako is a well-known Japanese restaurant close to Chinatown, with authentic decor, two hibachi tables for the preparation of the hugely theatrical and entertaining teppanyaki (fried meat or fish dishes with vegetables served on a special steel plate) and a tatami (traditional low Japanese) table for more formal sushi eating. The menu is fairly expensive but does include good value lunchtime set meals. Other popular options include the sushi platter with tuna, squid, scallop, shrimp etc and the light vegetable tempura. Imaginative desserts include green tea ice cream and there is a reasonable wine list, starting with a bottle of house white or red.
