Although this sleek, chic, top Manchester hotel has one foot over the city line in Salford, everything about The Lowry is unmistakably Manchester. From the curve of the architecture to the suites with floor-to-ceiling windows and grand pianos, this is one of the best urban retreats in Britain. All rooms come with dressing rooms, marble bathrooms, Wi-Fi and iPod docking stations, while the restaurant does a great line in northern-inspired dishes as well as cuisine from warmer climes. It all comes at a price though.
