White Lion Hotel (The), Manchester

This is probably the most well-known drinking place in the Castlefield area. It is exceptionally busy when there are events on at the arena nearby, when the pub usually puts on activities of its own such as live music and barbecues. The White Lion was built as a pub in the 1800s and is renowned for its excellent selection of real ales and food, which is served daily from lunchtime until 9pm. Favourites include oven-roasted lamb henry with vegetables and mash, with children's portions at half price. The wine list includes some good New World reds and whites, and watch out for the range of malt whiskeys.
