This is a large open-plan pub, situated at the bottom of Akenside Hill (which was named after Mark Akenside, the 18th century Tyneside poet) just behind the lively Quayside party district. Unlike most of the other drinking haunts at the Quayside, this is very definitely more of a pub than a bar, with traditional oak and brass in place of the beech and chrome of other establishments. The pub gets very busy at weekends and it can be a struggle to get to the bar, especially during early evening happy hours, but at lunchtimes it is a pleasant place to eat.
