Close to Eldon Square Shopping Centre, and the Theater Royal, the Cafe Royal is equally welcoming to tired shoppers, pre or post-performance diners, and just about anyone else. Much bigger than it looks from the outside (you don't notice the mezzanine restaurant area until you enter) the ground floor cafe attracts a mixed bag of people at lunchtime for coffee and cakes or pastries, or something a little more substantial such as pastas and sandwiches. It is in the evening that the restaurant, reached by climbing a curved staircase, comes into its own. The contemporary menu with its eclectic mix of Mediterranean and Chinese influences offers many mouth-watering choices, with a wide-ranging wine list for accompaniment. Newcastle has too few examples of this type of establishment, try this one.
