This traditional wood-paneled pub offers a quieter, more relaxed alternative to many of the bright and brash fun bars in the city centre. It is named after local hero Harry Hotspur (also known as Henry Percy) who, as Duke of Northumberland in the late 14th Century, helped Henry Plantagenet to overthrow King Richard II and become King Henry IV. This deed earned him a role in Shakespeare's Richard II, making him probably the only Geordie to appear in one of the bard's plays. The pub's proximity to the campuses of both the city's universities makes it popular with students, but the hand-pumped real ales also attract an older crowd, giving the Hotspur a broad appeal. Value for money basic food (pizza, pies, and sandwiches) is served throughout the day.
