This landmark is one of the great symbols of the city, and of the region as a whole. Like many great bridges, the Tyne Bridge is talismanic - welcoming those who belong or visit, and wishing safe return to those who depart. The emotional ties invested in this steel monument should not be underestimated. It is a genuinely dramatic sight, and seen at night from river level it is, frankly, beautiful. Three years in construction the bridge was opened by King George V in October 1928. Two of the four supporting towers contain elevators linking the bridge to the Quayside below.
