Overview

A bat cave is located on the grounds of the former NASA tracking station, which is now a medical school in the Picadilly area. It is a most fascinating place. The large cavern houses thousands of common bats, which when disturbed, fly around in a frenzy. Local myth had it that you could walk form Antigua to Guadeloupe from the caves. But, this may just be a myth as the trek alone would be worth an entry to the Guinness Book of records. A Smithsonian team studied it in the 1950s. Now it is possible to visit but you must stop and ask for permission to enter the property.

I personally went to the bat cave and had a great time. The entrance to the cave is located on a NASA tracking station base which was abandoned at the time. We found the building empty at the time but when I walked in there was an islander living there. He was friendly and offered to take us through the bat cave and we accepted his offer. He took us down a path in the forest to the bat cave entrance. As soon as we entered there were bats all over the walls. He took us on a tour of the bat cave that lasted three hours. The cave must have been formed when Antigua was under water because there are path ways leading up, down and all around. Carved out of stone. It is huge, that is why it took us three hours. But the bats were friendly and would only bump into you occasionally. And what was interesting is that there are no dead bat carcases anywhere. It is very clean. Even smells OK. To this day my bat cave adventure goes down as one of my life's great adventures. Lots of fun!...   Read More
