Fort George was constructed by freed slaves in the late 1600s. It was built to protect Falmouth, then the primary city on the island, and to serve as a place of refuge during an invasion. Visitors make the hike up the steep hill to wander among the ruins, including some of the original buildings, 32 cannons, cisterns and various other structures. It only takes about ten minutes to get there from Falmouth Harbour on the South Coast and it provides a magnificent panorama of the harbor. You might even take a picnic and make a day's adventure of it.
