Neighborhood: Bridgetown

In National Heroes Square in Bridgetown, there stands a cenotaph, dedicated to the soldiers who fought in World Wars I and II. The cenotaph, which was erected in 1925, bears the names of those who fought and died in those wars. At that time, Barbados, as a British colony, sent men to the front to fight alongside their British counterparts. Each year on Remembrance Day, celebrated in Barbados on the Sunday nearest November 11th, Armistice Day, a solemn service and parade are held in National Heroes Square and the Governor-General, Prime Minister, and other dignitaries lay wreaths at the cenotaph. A special feature of that service is a march by members of the Barbados Legion, which now also comprises veterans of more recent conflicts. -Marsilyn Browne
