Overview

In National Heroes Square stands the Dolphin Fountain, which was built in 1865 to commemorate the arrival of piped water in Bridgetown in 1861. Dolphin imagery is also part of the island's coat of arms, and is important to Barbados because it represents the fishing industry. The fountain is often not on, as Barbados seeks to conserve its water supply, but for special days, like Remembrance Day, when National Heroes Square is in the spotlight, the fountain comes alive in all of its glory. -Marsilyn Browne
