From the 17th to 19th Centuries, the British West India Regiment was stationed in Barbados. Their parade ground is now the home of horse racing on the island. Around that ground, and in its proximity, still stand several red brick regimental buildings which today house some very important institutions. The former military prison is now the home of the Barbados Museum and adjacent is the Caribbean Examinations Council. The former guard house is now the headquarters of the Barbados Legion. The Barbados Defence Force is south at St. Ann’s Fort and the Barbados Cadet Corps is east of the garrison. Also in the Garrison Historic Area is George Washington House, where young George Washington stayed on his only trip out of his native United States. -Marsilyn Browne
