Bridgetown is blessed with an array of churches representing various denominations and faiths, ensuring that any visitor to the capital city will find a place of peace to worship. James Street Methodist Church is located in one of the quieter shopping streets. The Methodists came to the island in the early nineteenth century and faced great opposition from the resident population. The original church on James Street was burnt to the ground by vandals in 1823. The church which currently stands on this site has a classic design and a Venetian portico. Seating is available on the ground level as well as upstairs. Today religious tolerance is very much a hallmark of the Barbados experience, and this church continues to vigorously serve the community. Marsilyn Browne
