Overview

Jubilee Gardens was developed in 1888 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee (fiftieth anniversary) of the reign of Queen Victoria. The gardens were set up at the western end of Broad Street, next to St. Mary’s Anglican Church. By 1929, however, the area was paved over to make way for a bus terminal called the Lower Green Terminal. In 2005, as part of an urban renewal program, the area was re-developed as a garden, becoming an open, green space in the busy city of Bridgetown. The gardens are set in a rectangle with plants in each of the four corners. The inner space is now a venue for exhibitions, musical performances, modeling shows and outdoor worship services. -Marsilyn Browne
