Neighborhood: St Philip

In the eastern parish of St. Philip, there lies a small park dedicated to the memory of King George V, grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II. The land was a gift to the people of St. Philip from the late Major Peebles, who lived at the historic Bailey's Plantation. Bailey's plantation was the home of the late national hero, Bussa, who led a slave rebellion there in 1816. Major Peebles' bequest was that the land should be used for recreation by the children of the parish. Today, the park boasts a play area for children, a pavilion and football and cricket fields, as well as a basketball court. The park is a popular location for picnics, fairs and community events. - Marsilyn Browne
