Main Guard, The, Barbados

The Main Guard is the home of the Barbados Legion and the Barbados Poppy League. Its clock tower is a famous landmark on the equally famous Garrison Savannah in St. Michael. The Main Guard also overlooks the area, which used to be the Parade Ground on the Garrison for British military troops stationed in Barbados. Its uses include the courts martial of troops, and military prisoners were housed nearby. The clock was made in England by renowned clock makers Dwerri and Carter and dates from 1803. Besides being a center for meetings and entertainment for ex-servicemen, the Main Guard is often the venue for lectures, seminars and receptions by charitable organizations for the general public. - Marsilyn Browne
