Overview

Barbados was the headquarters of British military forces in the Caribbean in colonial times. The troops were stationed at The Garrison in St. Michael. Around 1780, a cemetery was built at Needham's Point, just west of The Garrison. The oldest headstone in the cemetery dates from 1820. After some years of neglect, the cemetery was beautifully restored by the Barbados Military Cemetery Association, founded in 1975. The Memorial Building at the entrance provides fascinating insight into the cemetery and the troops who were stationed at The Garrison. A memorial to the Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow, first Prime Minister of independent Barbados, who fought in World War II, is located in the cemetery. The cemetery is still used for burials of members of the Barbados Legion. -Marsilyn Browne
