Overview
The Moravian religion began in Bohemia, modern-day Czech Republic, in 1457. The Moravians are best known in the West Indies for their missionary work and for bringing education to the slaves. They arrived in Barbados in 1765. The church at Sharon, in the central parish of St. Thomas, was the first church built by the Moravians in Barbados. The original building was constructed in 1799, but destroyed by a hurricane in 1831. The church was rebuilt in 1833. Its rectangular design, arched windows and rounded corners reflect the architecture of the Low Countries, where the Moravian movement flourished. -Marsilyn Browne
